This one's a bit personal.
On the 1st of October of 2017 a referendum was celebrated on Catalonia, despite the fact that the Spanish government claimed that it was illegal. Assault forces were sent to specific locations, beat people up and then proceeded to claim to be the victims when people defended themselves.
The unionists defended the attackers, by claiming that no violence occurred on their behalf, while also claiming that the violence was justified (makes you think) because we weren't supposed to be there voting because you know who also won via voting? Hitler. I swear, the right here is surreal.
During that time, some voices appeared saying that all this voting or no voting thing was dividing us and that we should focus on what unites us. That no side was 100% right. That we need to negotiate and compromise.
FFS, i was there. The fear was palpable. We were scared of them, because, despite our numbers, we were a bunch of unarmed pacifists. After five years of the central government ignoring any requests for negotiation, calling us nazis and then sending military police on us... yeah.. not much room for diplomacy anymore.
